English full form of the IAS is (Indian Administrative Service). How to become IAS Officer?
The qualification you need to become an IAS Officer is the completion of your Graduation from any recognized university in India. You can become IAS after qualifying all criteria of the Civil Service Examination (CSE). The Civil Services Examination is conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) each year.
You have to qualify below-mentioned three-stage of the Civil Service Examination to become an IAS Officer:
- Preliminary Examination (IAS Prelims)
- Mains Examination (IAS Mains)
- Personality Test (IAS Interview)
You have to first qualify for the stage-1 preliminary exam. It consists of two objective-type papers; 1. General Studies-I, 2. General Studies-II. In this, the second paper of general studies is also popular as the name of Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT).
Then you can give stage-2 mains exams. It is a written descriptive type examination. The mains civil service exams consist of 9 papers of which two papers are optional. So you have to qualify for at least 7 compulsory exams for the next stage.
After passing the mains exam there will be a personality test (interview stage) as a final stage of the IAS exam.
So you have to pass all the three-stage to become an IAS officer in India. This is one of the toughest exams in India. Lakhs of students give the UPSC exams but only a few become a civil service officer. The success rate of this exam is less than 1%.
