Why is Valentines’ Day Celebrated?

Valentine’s Day is also known as Saint Valentine’s Day or St. Valentine’s Day and celebrated every year on 14 Feb. But why it is celebrated or why its name is Valentine? Here you will know the reason for its name and the history behind its celebration.

Valentine’s Day was named after a Christian martyr “Saint Valentine”. According to a hypothetical story, Saint Valentine of Rome was imprisoned by the Roman Empire in the 3rd century. He restored the eyes of his jailer’s blind daughter. According to some stories, he has written a letter to the jailer’s daughter before his execution. The letter was signed quoted as “your valentine”.

Later by Pope Gelasius I in AD 496 on 14 February, celebrated Feast in honor of Saint Valentine of Rome. The day associated with romantic love and later this date grew as an occasion in which people expressed their love for each other by presenting gifts and flowers.

Its popularity started after the 17th century. Then lovers and friends started exchanging gifts and flowers. Now it is one of the most popular occasions for lovers.

This was the story behind “why is Valentine’s Day celebrated and why it is called Valentine’s Day”.

Though there are other stories for 14 Feb and Valentine, but this one is more acceptable by people.
